Homecourt Shoe Drive

This month we were fortunate enough to finally return to more in-person service activities. Prior to this, we had decided on doing a drive to donate goods to homeless families and children but hadn’t quite narrowed down what we wanted to give. Thankfully, we had a connection with Gladys Whitehead, the director of Homecourt Advantage, through shared basketball experiences with our president, editor, and Mrs. Whitehead’s children. Homecourt Advantage helps provide homeless children with athletic opportunities to bring joy, discipline, and a sense of identity, and they provide homeless shelters with basketball training programs. Because Homecourt Advantage is more centered around basketball, we decided to donate basketball shoes to children living at the East County Transitional Living Center, one of the homes HA is partnered with.

Over the course of the past week, we have had members come to Rohr park to drop off and donate basketball shoes. We were able to collect over 30 pairs of shoes within the first weekend, and even had students from other schools bring their shoes as well. The first 50 donors received a passion planner from HA, so this incentive brought out a lot of people to donate. It is one of the most successful events we have had this year, and we are grateful for the opportunity to give back to those in need, especially during the holiday season.
